Cottonmouth Close-up Block Print
Cottonmouths are one of the few venomous snakes here in south Mississippi and one of the most common in the southeast. They should be admired from a distance, but they are not normally aggressive (unless they are immediately threatened). I made this block print because I am learning about them, and it is a distinctive pattern to help identify them.
They are often confused with a copperhead or a water snake. One way to differentiate a cottonmouth from a water snake is the shape of their dark scales. Cottonmouths have Hershey kiss patterns (as seen in this image) and water snakes have a tornado shaped pattern. How can you decipher a cottonmouth from a copperhead? well cottonmouths have a pixilated pattern and the copperheads are smooth. Copperheads also don’t generally live south of I-10 in Mississippi.
Each print is hand made using oil based ink and a linoleum block that I carved. Because of this, none of them will be the same. You might receive a different print of the same image. It will be made with the same block using the same ink and paper.
The print is 3×5 on 5×7 recycled French Paper Company paper.
